Amanzimtoti is a town on South Africa’s east coast, 26kms south of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. According to local legend, when King Shaka led his army on a raid against the Pondos in 1828, he rested on the banks of a river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed “Kanti manzi mtoti”, which is isiZulu and translates as “So, the water is sweet”. The river came to be known as Amanzimtoti (Sweetwaters) and so the town was called the same name.
The town, known as Toti, is a popular tourist holiday destination, with beautiful beaches and warm weather throughout the year. Amanzimtoti is bisected by the N2 highway and the railway line, and is situated around 25kms from Durban and approximately 50km from the new King Shaka International Airport on the KwaZulu Natal north coast.Amanzimtoti is renowned for its warm weather and its beaches. It is also a popular tourist destination, particularly with surfers, and the annual sardine run attracts many to the beaches. Many South Africans flock here during school holidays and on long weekends.
Amanzimtoti has also proved a firm favourite as a KZN coastal holiday property haven offering great value for money and with properties to suit all buyers pockets and needs. Amanzimtoti stretches from Athlone Park in the South to Illovo Beach in the north, a distance of around 15kms along the coast, incorporating the suburbs of Doonside, Warner Beach and Winklespruit, and inland to Doonheights, Kwamakutha, Shulton Park, and St. Winifreds.
The town has grown enormously over the years since King Shaka first set foot on the banks of the river, and growth in recent years has seen the opening of the Galleria Mall, which is a large regional shopping mall of retail shops, restaurants, movies and entertainment outlets. Arbour Crossing also opened shortly before the Galleria. There are numerous restaurants in and around Amanzimtoti, as well as Churches, Sports Clubs and Schools. Southgate light industrial park is close to the Galleria Mall with heavier industry situated in Umbogintwini. Amanzimtoti property styles vary from upmarket apartments to modern townhouse complexes and more traditional family houses.
Amanzimtoti is home to a variety of wildlife including troops of Vervet monkeys, Mpiti buck, Blue Duiker and a large number of bird species. In the ocean off the coast can be seen Dolphins plus Humpback Whales who come here to calve between July and November. This stretch of coast is also famous for the annual Sardine Run which happens every July, and is a fisherman’s paradise. Most of the wildlife can be found along the Amanzimtoti River or in the coastal dune vegetation. A nature reserve was established along the banks of the river in 1965 called Ilanda Wilds. There is also a 'bird park' called Umdoni Bird Sanctuary along one of the tributaries of the Amanzimtoti River. Other nature reserves and green areas include; Umbogavango, Vumbuka, and the Pipeline Coastal Park.
